The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has funded Kansas State University to the tune of $175,000 to the National Radon Hotline and its website. Through this campaign, public awareness regarding radon–the colorless and odorless natural gas causing the second greatest number of lung cancer cases in nonsmokers is heightened; thus increased access to radon test kits and mitigation tools is available to people. This is much more critical to those areas having high-risk zones, and EPA Region 7 comprises Kansas as such an area.
Radon is a particular challenge since it can creep silently into homes, potentially placing its human inhabitants in danger. This grant will enable Kansas State to conduct public outreach and distribute inexpensive test kits to encourage families to test for radon and take corrective action should radon be detected. Funding priorities for the EPA overall align with indoor air quality, asthma reduction activities, and other programs focused on improving health outcomes within diverse populations.
Increased funding given to bodies such as the American Lung Association and all other health-associated organizations for further efforts into environmental hazards is also an indication that the EPA will never stop trying to ensure better health in the indoor community.
